I dont know how much you know about The Amburgey Name but all Amburgey's after the 1800's came from the same area in Kentucky. There is still a town there called Amburgey. Its not a well know town, but it is there. There is an Amburgey family bible available also, my uncle, John Amburgey is the unofficial historian of our tribe of Amburgey's and I get the feeling he is trying to pass the torch to myself. I have a copy of our family crest if you don't have one. We all come from a man named Hans Conrad Amburger who traveled here in the 1800's landing in the Carolina's and traveling up through Virginia Tennesee and settling in Kentucky. Needless to say Hans was a very active man. He left a few wakes here and there across those states. The best thing I can tell you is that If It Is Spelled AMBURGEY you are related in some way. Hans changed his name for some unknown reason to Amburgey. Thereby placing the name in stone as his own and his families own. Keep In Touch. Joseph Amburgey

Dear Barb and Len- A friend of my son's directed me to your website. On February 13th, my son, age 34, suffered a skiing accident in Crested Butte, CO, where he and his family live. Like Barbie, his binding pre-released and threw him head-first into a tree. Fortunately, he also was wearing his helmet or he would certainly not have survived. His sci is at the C-7 level, and his paralysis is complete Asia-A below his chest. Like Len, apparently, I have been doing a great deal of research into the various stemcell trails and treatments around the world. Don't know whether to be encouraged or not. I pray that these will enable Barbie, Noah (my son) and all sci victims increased function in the near future. I am also investigating the various excercise machines available...FES bikes, Standing tables/gliders, etc. Can you tell me what you have found to be most effective in your experience? All the best to you and your family, and thank you in advance for any guidance you can provide. We are just out of the gate here, and the learning curve is HUGE. Mimi Wight Francestown, NH

Hello Lenny, Barbie, Ben and Becky, How are you all? Did you survive my apple pie? Do you like homemade buttermilk waffles? I am planning to come to Massachusetts during our April vacation from school the week of April 15 - April 22. I am very good at making a large batch of waffles. I made a batch today and brought them over to my daughter, Melissa and Ben and their son, my grandson, Levi. They have seemed to survive them. Are there any days that might work for you for a little one hour visit? I just read your update, Lenny, WoW! I must say that it is a true blessing that you are as gifted an individual as you are and have always been. I had no idea about the lift you put together as well as all the rest. I was very touched by my visit in December. You truly have a wonderful family. Your son and daughter are beautiful and bright. The website you have created is awesome! I have some funny pictures that were sent to me by a girlfried, called Photos of the Year, that you might enjoy if you have an email that I can send them to you. If not, I will respect your privacy. I would love to know if there was something that I could do for you or the children. Please tell me what might be a support to you now, when I come during April vacation or in the future. Barbie, I think about you often. You have always been the most remarkable woman I have ever met close to my age. I still think that is true. You have always been a model for me and I have respected you always. Now, I love you like a true friend. Please tell me if there is something special I can do for you, anything! Blessings and Love, Linda P.S. I hope to see you soon. I know how busy you are and I do not want to interrupt any plans you may have. I would love to see you again if it works for you. I will make the waffles at my Mom's home and bring them over. The buttermilk is from a local organic farm. I would love to bring you some of their wonderful bacon, also and perhaps some fresh maple syrup. Does that sound good to you?

Hello... I too came across your website by accident while searching for another Barbie that was a friend of mine from childhood. But I was intrigued by your website and decided to read on, and am fascinated by your courage and strength through this ordeal. God bless you both and your children and remember that there's lots of us out here that are praying for you (even total strangers like me!)

Hi Len and Barbie, This message is intended to introduce myself and offer an organized benefit ride this summer with the help of my friends in Paxton and Team Bike Alley. I started a Century Ride/Walk with a raffle for a friend (Steve Jackson)of mine that died while riding his bycycle in Oakham two years ago. The first year we raised money for his two sons college funds and the second year we raised money for the Lance Armstrong Foundation. This year if it's okay with you, we would like to dedicate the Ride/Walk to Barbie and all of the proceeds will go to her. We ride from Paxton to Mt. Wachusett and then back with an afternoon ride thru the Brookfields and Barre. My friend Steve and I skied Sunday River together several times, and he was also an avid cyclist. Having read your updates, and seeing so many things that he had in common, I thought Steve would have thought it very appropriate that his memory serve to help someone who obviously enjoyed and competed at the same things, and at the same places that he did. I have already discussed the idea with his family and they are behind it 100%. Last year we had almost 100 riders and walkers and this year we're hoping for more. The event would be called The Third Annual Jackson Memorial Ride/Walk to Benefit Barbie Amburgey. We have about 15 merchants that donate products and services to the raffle and food for the ride and a BBQ to finish. Trek has donated a bicycle each year and the Crowleys have donated a Ski Pass. If your interested in this event, hopefully on August 22nd, please let me know as soon as possible. My home e-mail is delorey360@aol.com I really hope you will take us up on this offer, even though we have never met, we have many mutual friends at the mountain. I'm sure we can recruit alot of your friends to join in the promoting of this event. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Best Regards, Dan Delorey

To Len...I'm sorry that I was just made aware of Barbie's accident, and that such a beautiful family is going through such hardship. I'm a long lost cousin (our moms are sisters) that hasn't seen you since I was in 8th grade (I'm 47 now). Mike and Mikey were just here in Tampa and he told me about the website. I signed up for the e-mail updates and hope to hear from you as well. Add me to those wishing and praying for Barbie's recovery. I just ran across this web site. I noted it was dated back the first of 2003 but thought this may still get to you. I was a Amburgey and I am trying to find relatives. My family was from Floyd Co. and Knott Co. Kentucky. My Grandfather was Hillard Amburgey. He had a sister named Barbara. She would be old, I guessing in her 80's or so. I just wondered if you may be related.

Hey There, Barb! I just got the urge to see how you were doing, and saw that this is the anniversary of the accident. Wow! Have you come a long way!! I'm so happy to hear that that spirit of yours is as strong as ever! (Oh, am I not supposed to use the exclamation point in e-ettiquette? Well, please forgive the enthusiasm, but I just admire you both so darn much!!!Glad to hear you're out and about increasingly. We spent Thanksgiving at my sister Joan's, (Alex's Mom). Buddy brought his trademark Broccoli/Cheese soup, and all the neices and nephews came as well. Alex is doing well at Bodin, also placed in the top in a recent crew competition. Robin, my sister Jane's daughter is doing an independent study with gray wolves in Colorado; and Danny, My brother's son, who recently graduated from my first alma mater(Mass College of Art) is freelancing web site development. He's sharing an apt on Huntington with a wonderful young lady named Meghan, also a free-spirit. Anyhow, I keep running into teachers who've worked with you and ask about you, Barb, and I always encourage them to make direct contact. Allie and I are putting together a collection of homemade goodies, that I'll drop off before your Christmas celebration. Please don't forget us on your Christmas card list. I so look forward to the latest photo! I continue to keep you(all) in my prayers. Happy Holiday Anticipation, Love and hugs, Barb and Allie

Dear Barbie, So nice to hear that you have been outside in the new wheelchair and helped in the mechanics of driving it. What an great improvement! Our fall gardens are pretty in their own way. Yes, the weeds grow, but when they are removed one can enjoy the smell of the sweet earth, and talk to the individual plants. I put in 2 Fosglove and an Arnica plant this week. You see, Leon had received a $50.00 gift certificate for doing work at a friend's daughter's wedding, and he had no idea what to do with a certificate from Dandilion Acres nursery. I quickly showed him the results with plants and new gardening supplies. Fall weather is here in Vt. We were in the White Mts. 2 weeks ago passing through from Belfast ME. Drove through the outskirts of Bethel and we both thought of you and Lenny. Happy Birthday to Ben and Becky. You must be proud of them and their vibrant lives as kids. God Bless you, our prayers go out to you and Lenn

July 29, 2003 Dear Barbie, Lennie, Becky, and Ben, I have never met any of you but feel I know you. I teach fourth grade at Northwest and have been following your trials and successes. Before school got out in June, my students and I had a conversation about our summer dreams hopes and wishes. We spoke about how your dreams and hopes would be quite different than ours. (Some of my students have older siblings who have been in your classes). We wondered what we might do to help. I recalled a note Lenny wrote once about your family enjoying reading together in the evening. So, we thought it would be fitting to purchase books for Becky and Ben. I will leave them with the staff in the high school office. Please pick them up at your convenience. Have a wonderful summer. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. Barbie, Len, Becky and Ben, I am keeping informed of all your progress and challenges. I am very happy you found a trusting and "friendly" person to spend time with you. Ben and Sam often say a prayer for "Kath's neighbor". I also I'm very excited to hear of some "functional wrist movement"; as you are probably aware this will open opportunities of independence. Know that we think you all of you often and will continue to keep you in our prayers. Hugs, Kelly and children

I keep you all in my prayers and hope to visit you before the end of the summer. When I see Nancy always ask how you are and as I have only met you several times at Nancy and Ricks office parties have not been too pushy but believe me I am rooting for you and praying for you. You have three blessings already Barbie, you have Lenny, Ben, and Becky. God is good. Man I would love to see the reward He gives you when this has stabilized. He is watching and He does care. I do not know Barbier,I was just looking at the listings at Foster-Healey site and came across this link for Barbie. As a very active Dad in the up bringing of my son, and having my second son born 13 days ago, my heart aches when I read such tragedies of a parent hurt in a activity that is used for "Family Time". I too am a active alpine skier but recently have been getting more involved in snowmobiling. I wish you both as well as the children the best of wishes on a speedy recovery for Barbie. Hi you all, First of all, we have not been receiving the update emails since mid April. We have logged on to the web site and gotten updated but soon we will not have access to the internet, just email. Second, we are now in Trinidad getting the boat ready to head west through the Venezuelan islands to Bonaire and Curacao where we plan to leave the boat next winter. We have had Trinis all over the boat replacing the standing rigging, lifelines, and anchor windlass. These are our projects for this year. It never ends but that's what living on a boat is all about. We plan to fly back to the states for two weeks in early June for a rendezvous with four of our kids and 10 of our 12 grandchildren in Hilton Head SC. We are really looking forward to seeing them all. Our thoughts and prayers are always with you guys and we wish that our schedule had allowed us to be at SR for the auction weekend. We're glad it turned out so successful. We know how much work Stu and Vicky and Fran and George put into it. It is great to hear of Barbie's progress and we hope it keeps coming faster and faster.

Barb, I'm sure Lenny showed you pictures from the auction but pictures can't adequately portray the emotions in the room that night. I really felt that the Sunday River FAMILY came together that night to help one of their own. Many people bid more for items than they were worth just to help out. It truly was a testimony to wonderful people doing something wonderful for a wonderful person. You deserve to receive anything that fundraiser can help you get. And I hope using any equipment that money can purchase will remind you what great people make up our Sunday River family.

Barb, you don't know my wife (Deb) and me but we attended your auction and are friends of George and Fran. We "picked out your kids" and it was so refreshing to see their enthusiasm and smiles. I am glad the auction was a success (we got out bid by $100 for the Hawaii trip). My wife had a couple of "adventures" and Fran is about to make her an honorary Farkle!! In closing it was good to meet so many of your friends. This accident may have taken some of your assets but you and your family are rich if measured by your friends love and admiration. I have never seen anything like the auction...so grass roots and so unselfish. If George and Fran allow us to hang around with them over the next few years I am sure we will meet you and your family over time. Keep the faith. Shawn (& Deb) McKenna

Dear Len & Barbie: You don’t know us, but we recently purchased a home through Foster-Healey and have been following your progress via the web site. We just wanted to let you know that you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers daily. The courage and conviction that all of you have shown in the face of an uphill battle is so inspiring. Life is cruel sometimes, and all too often it hits us with these challenges we think we’ll never in a million years conquer. But we have faith that all of you with come through this tragedy with flying colors. We are confident that Barbie is going to persevere and beat the odds of her condition. Len, you are such a wonderful man – to be standing by Barbie and going above and beyond to secure her future and your family’s future. It is unimaginable that someone might not do so, but I have seen it happen to the best of people. And congratulations on your successes with the battles of maneuvering and/or manipulating the system to get what you need – it is sad that in this day in age, we have to do so to acquire the necessities of supporting a lifestyle like Barbie’s. To your friends and family, I think it is so wonderful to see your never-ending love and support in this time of need. Keep up the good work! Please know that you are in the minds, hearts, and prayers of thousands of people out there, who may or may not have had a chance to express such. We are rooting for you all!! And we are looking forward to seeing an updated photo of you and your family when you are up to it! Seeing your progress will be even more rewarding than hearing about it. Keep us posted!

Keep up the good work and know rhat I have been following your progress via Len's e-mails and have had you in my prayers also. Lots of love to you all. Mary Lee

Dear Len & Barbie, Ben & Becky, As George wrote, I was in NYC on business the day of the official "homecoming!" I can tell you that all day long I thought of you all and wondered and imagined and prayed for how the day was going. Welcome home Barbie and hurray for all the progress you've made and will continue to make! I cherished the image of Becky "reading" a story to Barb - take care all. Love and hugs, Fran

Dear Barbie, What good news! You are home and have the use of your voice and arms! This is an answer to our prayers here in Sharon, VT. My church says a prayer for "Carol's Friend" in a Boston Hospital each week. Now I can tell tham the good news of your progress. Just think you are home in your wonderful house, spring is coming and your woods will be there to welcome you. Sorry that I lost my beginning message while I went back to see pictures of you and Ben and Becky. Wow, I did not know that you and Lenny had adoopted two cute kids. Can't think of better parents than you two. Leon and I think of you often, we wear the vests you gave us when we are snowshoeing and x-country skiing. It's been a great winter for it here in VT. When we are in Fitchburg next, or visiting Lou-Ellen in Charlton we will call you. Your dear friends,

Hi Len & Barb! All day long I kept wondering how Barb's return home would go today - even while I was being observed by my supervisor while teaching my geometry class! I am sure it will be a mix of emotions for Barb, but being back with the kids will make go a long way towards making the days brighter. I had contacted Joan Putnam and she had heard about the accident but not known it was Barb. You may be hearing from her soon. Paul & I and half the people we know are praying for you!

Hi Guys, Ijust finished reading Len's update from this morning. Barb, youare doing fantastic! Iknow that you must feel like this is taking forever, but , I remember my years at the pedi nursing center, and the hours of PT and OT, and the Feeding program, where I worked with kids who had had traumatic brain injuries, and realize how far we've come with knowledge of nerve regeneration, muscle atrophy no longer being a dead end, but simply re-training(no, not that simply, I know). Well,I just thank God that you've regained your voice, the use of your arms, that you are now self-propelling/steering that chair... and I've just gotta say... You Go Girl!!!!! We're all very proud of you. Love, "The other" Barb

Hi Len, Barb, Ben and Becky! I've been praying for you all since that weekend in December. Buddy had been providing me w/copies of the updates via e-mail, but has been unavailable for about a month. Carol told me there was a website, so I searched , and here I am. Barb, I want you to know that you and Len have always made Allie and Me feel really welcome at our family gatherings. I've felt a kinship that transcends our names. It warms my heart to see how devoted you two are to each other, and your family. I purchased a little Boyd's Bear , "HOPE", the weekend I learned of your fall, but didn't know exactly how I could send it along... till now. I see the address in the message archives,so I'll be sending HOPE along tomorrow. Now, promise that you'll never lose HOPE. Please let me know when you are home and feeling up to some company, when your garden's in bloom, and I'll do some botanical watercolors for you. Love, always... and a gentle hug, Barb and Allie

Hi Len, Even when your messages contain not-so-good news it is nice to receive them in order to keep up not only with Barb but with you and the kids. I read every word. A few days ago you mentioned some 'remodeling' that will have to be done on your house. I would be happy to come over for a week or so and give you a hand. I have friends I can stay with fairly close by. I can't offer expertise but will swing a hammer, haul stuff or do whatever I can so please keep me in mind when you get to this stage. Also, if you think we'll need it, I can bring my pickup truck. Best to you, Barb, Becky and Ben. George

Dear Len & Barbie, Just to add another positive note....the van customizing company you found in Londonderry is excellent. They are one of my husband's customers and he said they have a top notch reputation. They are also the same company that customized a van for his uncle after he had a stroke and they customized a van for my cousin after he suffered a traumatic brain injury. Both sets of relatives said they were wonderful people to work with...expecially when it seemed like a million questions needed to be answered. Hope this puts your mind a little more at ease. Sending my thoughts and prayers your way.... Sincerely, Francine

As everyone says, you all have such tremendous courage and strength and all our prayers and good thoughts go out to all of you. It was terrific to visit with Nancy and catch up on all her family news. Joseph in Eighth Grade is quite a surprise. Who ever thinks about ages? Take care, Barbara.

So glad to read Barbie is off the ventilator talking again and eating real food. You don't appreciate what you have until it is not so readily available. Are you familiar with the six wheel wheel chair invented by Dean Kamen in New Hampshire from DECA (I think that is the company name) the same guy that invented the segway? It can climb stairs and can raise up to help a person with life's chores. Barbie may not be ready for it yet, but it may be something to look into as the next step. I understand it is just being recognied by insurance companies for coverage. It sounds like progress is good and hopefully she will be moving through these appliances on her way to dancing again. I saw Stu this morning and he is staying busy (read: staying out of trouble) with some of the fund raising issues. He showed me the quilt Fran's sister Sarah has made for the fund raiser and it is beautiful, should bring a good price! Time to get to doing some income tax work, yuck, so I'll sign off. Hi Barbara, My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. My grandson, Sean Landry, (grade 5 at Samoset), enjoyed your class and attended the basketball game on Saturday. I retired from Leominster High several years ago and still ride my bike in good weather. I remember you and Lenny passing me many times on the hill on Route 12 (Central Street) early mornings in the early 1980's. George Schroeder

Dear Len and Barbara, Just one of those times that I was thinking of both of you, but was actually able to write. You both show incredible courage and strength during this recovery period. Len, please hang in there. The "business" aspect of this can be both trying and exhausting, but I would like to pass on a few tidbits based on my own personal experiences with Blue Cross. DON'T TAKE NO FOR AN ANSWER. ALWAYS ASK TO SPEAK WITH A MANAGER NOT A CUSTOMER SERVICE REP. GET YOUR LOCAL STATE REP. OR SENATOR INVOLVED. You would be amazed at how quickly the insurance industry responds to phone calls and how things "miraculously" become appropved when a politician is involved. Hope this helps. Ben and Becky seem like two awesome children. It is amazing at how resilient children can be during "trying" times. Keep your spirits up. We are all thinking of you and praying for you. Sincerely, Francine Meigs

Just a quick tidbit from Johnny Appleseed School. Tonight was Family Literacy Night and in spite of the weather, 35 families came out to in "Jammies" to enjoy story telling with Karen Fortin. Thanks so much for the web page, now it is so easy to read every step of your progress. Sounds like you are "athome" again in the therapy gym. Your name has been added to the prayer list at Pilgrim Congregational Church. You have touched many lives of the membership and now you are in their thoughts and prayers daily. Karen
